Popular! is a 75 minute documentary feature about contemporary cuban music, also known as "timba" and the super Cuban orchestra Charanga Habanera. Charanga was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2003. Short Synopsis: The Buena Vista Social Club made “Cuban Music” famous around the world but the music with mass popularity in Cuba is made by the generation born after the revolution. Popular! documents the feverish musical fusion created by Cuba’s new generation and a legendary bandleader who has stayed at the top of Havana’s competitive music scene in spite of government bannings and the loss of his stars to greener pastures.

E’ un viaggio in compagnia dei celebri componenti del gruppo attraverso Cuba nelle sue diverse realtà, dall'inconfondibile Habana Vieja alla Varadero degli operai, da un affollato Parque Lenin e soprattutto a Fanguito, territorio charanguero per eccellenza e definito da Calzado il Bronx di Cuba, dove si sente l'odore di "cubanìa" anche attraverso lo schermo.

Synopsis en Espan~ol: El Buena Vista Social Club hizo "música cubana" famosa alrededor del mundo pero la música con popularidad masiva en Cuba es hecha por la generación nacida después de la revolución. ¡Popular! documenta la fusión musical febril creada por la nueva generación y un bandleader legendario de Cuba que ha permanecido en el tope del mundo competitivo de la música de La Habana a pesar de incidentes de censura del gobierno y la pérdida de sus estrellas a pastos más verdes. La Charanga Habanera llegó a tener notoriedad en 1997 cuando letras y gestos escenicos condujeron a una interdicción del gobierno. Son los heros a la juventud cubano que resuena a su crítica lírica elegante de la calle y ritmos infecciosos. David Calzado y su Charanga Habanera fue nominada en 2003 para un Grammy Latino.
